As strange as it might seem, success is not enough. It’s not the pinnacle that many of us envision. There is higher point…one that we’re called to as we enjoy greater and greater personal success.
I’ve had the good fortune to work with high school students in their business classes for almost thirty years. One of my messages to them is that success is not enough…that as they become increasingly successful, they’ll still feel unfulfilled.
I then point to the half dozen or so other mentors who are devoting their time to help these budding entrepreneurs and say, what each of these people have found is that their personal success creates a desire to share what they’ve learned so that others can enjoy success as well. That’s why they’re devoting their time, energy and knowledge to helping you success.
Ultimately, what gives our lives purpose, what gives it value, what makes it the most enjoyable, is when we contribute to the welfare of others.
We see this played out on Shark Tank. Cynics may say: “Yes, but the sharks are making more money too.” That’s true. But does that negate the fact that they’re sharing the lessons they learned to help others…even when no deal is made?
In a similar vein, it’s obvious that the coaches on The Voice want the singers they’re coaching to be successful. Some of the coaches have arranged singers to open for them…regardless of whether that singer won the contest or not.
The most successful among us develop a sense of abundance that creates a craving to share their good fortune (almost always, the result of hard work and perseverance) with others.
So what does this mean for you?
Takeaway
The pursuit of personal success (however you define it) is healthy. It’s what propels society forward. Yet, know that it won’t be enough to satisfy the need you have for a greater purpose. That can only be found when we share what we’ve learned…and earned…in helping others experience the success they desire.
